Sometimes people actually do want your help.

In that case, have at it! Show off your skills! My kids know that with certain things I’m like a dog with a bone. I’ll make calls and write letters until I get results. My children are adults now. They manage their own affairs. But every once in a while, they run up against a frustrating situation. Maybe they’re at their wits’ end dealing with a customer service rep—using the word “service” loosely—and they can’t get a matter resolved. That’s when they call me up and say “Help!” I am on it. Often I can actually get results, and it’s a win/win situation. They get their problem resolved and I get the satisfaction of knowing they still need their mom.

And from time to time I’ll get a call with a teensy voice on the other end saying, “Mommy?” That means Leah’s sick. Sometimes she’s been ill enough that I needed to be there. Other times just some suggestions over the phone will do. Libby and Susanna will call for home remedies for the grandchildren when they’re sick, or ask for some housekeeping advice. It’s nice to be able to help. I just have to watch I don’t cross the line.
